Is it possible to die standing up and remain that way?
Q. I don't really know where to put this question, Health, Education, Japan, Taiwan (where I teach). Sorry if it doesn't belong here. I had a student come up to me the other day and ask me a really puzzling question. Mind you these are middle school aged kids so things like this are more interesting to them. The questions was "I was watch a Japanese history drama, they talked about a samurai that die and was still stand guard" ~ translated ~" I was watching a Japanese historic drama, and they was a samurai that died standing guard over his master." Well it took me nearly all weekend to find what the heck he was talking about but persistence won and I found the tale/legend of the Standing Death of Benkei" ( , Benkei no Tachi j ). Apparently… [cont.]

A. I have heard of this story. It was on a Japanese history channel thing, from what I remember they say that the battle took place during winter, and in a combination of his extreme fatigue and his body being flooded with adrenalin it sped up the rigor mortise process. I believe that they said that it didn't take long for them to rush him allowing for him to be found standing before the enviable collapse. It was as suspected that he probably used his naginata towards the end to stabilize himself knowing that he was about to die. In my opinion it is possible because when someone goes into rigger their body will stiffen and being in the cold weather it will speed up this process, however I also think that he was probably using his naginata to… [cont.]
