Dōgen Zenji (道元禅師; also Dōgen Kigen 道元希玄, or Eihei Dōgen 永平道元, or Koso Joyo Daishi) (19 January 1200 – 22 September 1253) was a Japanese Zen Buddhist teacher born in Kyōto, and the founder of the Sōtō school of Zen in Japan. He was a leading religious figure of his time, as well as being an important philosopher. Dōgen is most known for the Treasury of the Eye of the True Dharma or Shōbōgenzō, a collection of ninety-five fascicles concerning Buddhist practice and enlightenment. Early lifeDōgen was born into a noble family. His father may have been Koga Michichika (久我道親), a high-ranking minister in the imperial court, while his mother was likely the daughter of Fujiwara Motofusa (藤原基房), who had once been a regent in the court. Dōgen's father died when Dōgen was three years old, and his mother when he was eight, which strongly impressed Dōgen with the Buddhist notion of impermanence (Japanese: 無常 mujō). That is truly a deep question, I suppose you could go deeper on other levels, but someone said "Every day above ground is a good day." If you happen to like deep I would recommend Books by Jack Handy. Deep, Deeper and Deepest. I read and memorized each deep thought like memory verses. Answered by B. Your search among books, word upon word, may lead you to the depths of knowledge, but it is not the way to receive the reflection of your true self. When you have thrown off your ideas as to mind and body, the original truth will fully appear. Zen is simply the expression of truth; therefore longing and striving are not the true attitudes of Zen. -Dogen, "The Practice of Meditation" Peace and Love There are many, but the one I was thinking of is from Matthew: Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Asked by bigchadmark - Fri Dec 21 21:34:13 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Lao Tzu is known as the author of the foundational Taoist text, Tao Te Ching. Traditionally, it is believed that he lived in the 500s BCE, although scholars believe that if such a figure actually existed,he lived in the 300s BCE. Chances are that Lao Tzu is mythical. Dogen Zenji was the founder of the Japanese Soto Zen tradition and lived from 1200 to 1253 CE. The Taoist and Soto Zen traditions are each extremely complex and a short answer won't accurately capture the ways in which they are similar or different. Dogen wrote extensively. His best-known work in the West is Shobogenzo.
