What are 3 symbols of this poem by Hakuin?
Q. Past, present, future: unattainable, Yet clear as the moteless sky. Late at night the stool's cold as iron, But the moonlit window smells of plum.

A. Just a guess: 1) Time. 2) Nature. 3) The outside world.

Does anyone know of Hakuin and 'the great doubt'?
Q. Was it a boundless and inexpugnable realization or 'coming to'?

However, I looked it up, and my understanding--cursory as it is--is that a sudden realization comes upon a student of Zen after a perhaps years-long process of coming to. So, it's both. Which, given the practice of Zen, is fitting.

When the young unmarried daughter of the village grocer became pregnant, she named Hakuin as the father. Her outraged parents went to Hakuin and charged him with the deed. Hakuin simply said, "Is that so?" When the child was born, once again the parents came to Hakuin. They handed him the baby and demanded he take responsibility for raising it. Hakuin said, "Is that so?" and took the baby in his arms. Dutifully he began to look after the infant. A year later, the young woman could bear it no longer. She confessed that the real father was a young man who worked in the nearby fishmarket. The parents went to Hakuin once more, this… [cont.]

A. Like it or not...we all have a responsibility... To each other... Isn't that so ? Doing the right thing is one of them. Some will take advantage of that...in the end what is the right thing Honesty, Empathy, Selflessness, ...and realizing one's lack of doing the right thing "Accountability"...come to mind
