Taoism (or Daoism) refers to a variety of related philosophical and religious traditions that have influenced Eastern Asia for more than two millennia, and have had a notable influence on the western world since the 19th century. The word 道, Tao (or Dao, depending on the romanization scheme), literally translated as "path" or "way", although in Chinese folk religion and philosophy it carries more abstract meanings. Taoist propriety and ethics emphasize the Three Jewels of the Tao: compassion, moderation, and humility, while Taoist thought generally focuses on nature, the relationship between humanity and the cosmos (天人相应), health and longevity, and wu wei (action through inaction), which is thought to produce harmony with the universe.

Reverence for ancestor spirits and immortals is also common in popular Taoism. Organized Taoism distinguishes its ritual activity from that of the folk religion, which some professional Taoists (Daoshi) view as debased. Chinese alchemy (including Neidan), astrology, cuisine, several Chinese martial arts, Chinese traditional medicine, feng shui, immortality, and many styles of qigong breath training disciplines have been intertwined with Taoism throughout history.

In what ways are Buddhism and Taoism compatible? In what ways do they tend to clash?
Q. If I were to call myself a Zen Buddhist and a Taoist, what philosophical problems can one expect to encounter?

A. Generally speaking they are compatible, but still there is a number of issues that you might want to look at. First of all historically Taoism and Buddhism rose independently. Then Buddhism arrived to China. Eventually through a complex interaction Neo-Taoism emerged joining together elements from Taoism, Buddhism and Confucianism. This is what most people refer to when they speak of Taoism in China. This is not necessarily what most people in the west (or here) refer to as Taoism. Then Neo-Taoism merged again with Buddhism and gave rise to Ch'an Buddhism. Which going to Japan lost its physical side of the practices, and concentrated on the meditative side and became Zen. So Zen and Taoism are related, and you could say that Zen is the… [cont.]

How are the ways of life of the Taoist Wise Men similar to that of the Buddhist Monks? Taoism Buddhism?
Q. How are the Taoist Wise Men similar to the Buddhist Monks? Taoists and Buddhists have different goals in life and each wants to achieve different things. The Taoists believe the world should work naturally and the Buddhists want to achieve enlightenment, but what methods do each of them use that are similar?

A. Taoist practice is most like Zen Buddhist practice - however the two practice traditions have very different objectives. Taoist practitioners generally seek to develop personal qualities - longevity, special energies, harmony with circumstances, and so on. Zen practitioners seek to attain enlightenment, which is a complete turning away from self-concern, toward a concern for the well-being of others. From this, you can see that Zen monks and lay practitioners have a very different purpose in their practice. Taoist practice involves both seated meditations (using breath and energy) and active meditations such as tai chi and chi kung. Zen practice involves meditation, chanting, bowing, and koan training. Of these, only meditation… [cont.]

How can I learn about Taoism?
Q. I can't find anyone who knows about it in real life, and I want to learn about it. Is there a book or something I could read that could help? Thanks beforehand!
Asked by Tim O - Sun Aug 31 23:10:11 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. A great book to read is, The Jade Emperors Mind seal Classic. IF you are really serious about learning of Taoism I can give you more information on a group here on Yahoo Groups. The Tao Te Ching is also a very good book in my opinion. It is debatable however whether Lao Tzu actually existed. It is thought that he is three people or rather the Tao Te Ching was written by three different people over the period of three hundred years. IF Lao Tzu did exist it would only make sense if he was a true "heavenly Immortal", as defined in the Jade Emperor's Mind Seal Classic.
