A. 1) The basic beliefs and concepts of Confucianism are similar to Taoism in the sense that they want peace and good behavior. 2) The Buddhists, on the other hand, strictly have the purpose to reach Nirvana and follow the four noble truths. 3) The overall goal of Confucian is different than Buddhism and Taoism because the overall goal of the Confucius is to find their peaceful and harmonious place in life, while the two others have no overall goal. 4) Taoism is not a belief-centered religion, and there are no known Taoist creeds. At the same time, certain characteristic beliefs or assumptions can be identified. One of these is the existence of several classes of supernatural beings, who may enter into relations with human beings. These… [cont.]

A. Buddha: we can get free from suffering through getting rid of attachment/desire, aversion/hatred and ignorance, and instead developing compassion, love and wisdom. Laozi (Daoism): we can get free from all problems through living in harmony with nature and the natural way of the universe. Kongzi (Confucius): he stresses more living in harmony with society and other people.

Why does Confucianism and Daoism(Taoism) seem to avoid specifics?
Q. Both religions seem to have a very loose definition of right and wrong, but leaves the believer to contemplate between them. For example the Filial Piety hierarchy of sorts seems to set up the initial relationships, but the definitions of the duties are very loosely explained. Why is this? Why do both religions seem to have such a loose structure? I am just curious to see what people answer to this question, and in no way am degrading either religion or way of thought. Thanks in advance.

A. I'm not sure that helping others is necessarily required but I do know that much of this one Mahayanan (Buddhist) book of meditations focuses on actually looking outward, not actually being the center of your life (don't cherish self). With any situation you can ask yourself "what is the good thing to do here" and hypothetically if you do that enough the good thing becomes reflex and you don't have to keep asking that same boring question. I think bottom line the answer is that Buddhism anyway teaches that good is achievable and it's totally in your hands - "all you have is your actions" is one of the five rememberances.

A. You should have put this in history. These are classified as philosophies. Here are a few main differences: Confucianism-people are generally good but they need training. Legalism- people are evil, state is more important. Daoism/Taoism- People don't need to be educated to be good because everyone is good. Must be in harmony with nature.

A. Taoism preceded Confucianism and was the precursor to most of Confucius personal beliefs and he was in fact a student of Lao. I have no Idea what legalism is as regards these two men since Chinese legalism was over a thousand years later and more a social code that a religious practice. It was one of the four codes which did include Taoist and Confucianism at that time, but that is the only connection.

A. You can use yahoo answers, but you don't know how to use Wikipedia or Google? Pity. But for kicks, I'll go ahead and write your homework for you. Confucianism and Daoism were very similar, especially to modern Egotism. Confucius once said "The way of Daoism directly entwines with that of Confucianism", while Lao Tzu agreed wholeheartedly. The similarities are between their almost disregard for other peoples well-being, The only difference that I can truly think of is the way they handled politics, Confucius opting for a more Totalitarian style government, while Lao Tzu leaned more towards Communism. Another less obvious difference was their sexuality, Lao Tzu was a well known homosexual, while Confucius thought that marriage should be… [cont.]
