Taoism (or Daoism) refers to a variety of related philosophical and religious traditions that have influenced East Asia for more than two millennia, and have had a notable influence on the western world since the 19th century. The word 道, Tao (or Dao, depending on the romanization scheme), literally translated as "path" or "way", although in Chinese folk religion and philosophy it carries more abstract meanings. Taoist propriety and ethics emphasize the Three Jewels of the Tao: compassion, moderation, and humility, while Taoist thought generally focuses on nature, the relationship between humanity and the cosmos (天人相应), health and longevity, and wu wei (action through inaction), which is thought to produce harmony with the universe.

Reverence for ancestor spirits and immortals are also common in popular Taoism. Organized Taoism distinguishes its ritual activity from that of the folk religion, which some professional Taoists (Daoshi) view as debased. Chinese alchemy (including Neidan), astrology, cuisine, several Chinese martial arts, Chinese traditional medicine, feng shui, immortality, and many styles of qigong breath training disciplines have been intertwined with Taoism throughout history.

Does willpower go against the Taoist idea of following The Way?
Q. Willpower can be defined as the ability to exert one's will over one's actions. Is this contrary to the Taoist idea of non-action and following The Way, in which the goal is to surrender our desires and act out of what comes naturally, rather than a forced push of willpower?

A. There are two sides to the understanding of willpower. Having the Peace and Discipline necessary to yield to our Creator is a form of willpower, by being still and overcoming the desire to "be in control" as you ably describe. This is spiritual maturity. Aligning with His will. When we are in alignment with Him, we are growing rapidly. Wrestling with where our Creator wants us to be, rather than yielding to His will, is a willpower of the flesh, and is a fruitless struggle.

A. Last time I checked Natukong or Datukgong is a god of wealth allegedly worshipped by Chinese Taoists. Yes, you are right, according to my researches, he is a Malay deity. Maybe this belief in Datukgong was brought to the general Chinese population in Malaysia by the Straits Chinese and Baba Nonya of Melaka, whose beliefs blend both Malay and Chinese culture.

A. Ah well dear, perhaps we should speak of things like literature, philosophy, and what we study from love, and not necessity. But first, if you ever study Chinese, you will discover that the history of China was fairly scorched, in the old days known as the warring states, by three distinct ways of viewing the world. Confucianism, Daoism, and Legalism. All of these fairly grew as religions do, and over time the Han dynasty destroyed the favor of legalism, elevated Confucianism tio the State Religion, and left Daoism for the people. Now, the Confucianist expressed themselves in Poetry and Song, and thus, culturally, it became de riguer to do so. 1000 years later, by the time of the Tang Dynasty, all the greatest poets seemed to be… [cont.]
